When the country went in to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown, hairdressers were one of the businesses who had to close their doors, and across the country people started to either grow their hair, or they cut their own.
Alfie, who was 7 years old at the time, decided this was a great opportunity to not only let his hair grow, but also to raise money for charity by growing his hair out as long as he could for two whole years. He said:
I chose to grow my hair because I couldn’t get my hair cut in lockdown, and I didn’t want my mum to cut it. I thought, why not just grow it and raise money.
In the last two years Alfie has smashed his initial £500 fundraising target, and his fundraising total has reached a brilliant £1,080 so far.
Alfie decided to fundraise for Children with Cancer UK because he wanted to help children going through cancer treatment.
Sadly, Alfie’s fundraising journey has not been without its challenges. He experienced being bullied for having long hair as a boy. He said:
At one point I wanted to give up, but my mum said we could cut half of it and leave half of it long. So that’s what we decided to do, and instead of growing it all I grew the top know long.
We’re so incredibly thankful to Alfie for taking on this challenge, and for choosing to stick with it. We couldn’t be doing what we’re doing without the support from fundraisers like Alfie, and we so appreciate his dedication over the last two years.
