Staying teetotal for a year
Louise decided to go for a year without drinking alcohol to help raise funds for childhood cancer research after her friend got a cancer diagnosis. Louise explains why she decided to make it a fundraising challenge:It started because her husband’s close friend Chris was given a terminal cancer diagnosis. After which he decided to get in the best shape of his life and start raising money for Children with Cancer UK. My husband joined our friend in doing the London Marathon in 2021 but as I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue there’s no way I would be able to do the marathon myself, so I decided to choose something equally as difficult.Louise’s target was £365 but she quickly went past that target and changed the target to £1,000. Her final amount she raised was £2,160.
My challenge officially ended on the 11 January 2023, it was life-changing. I feel like I may have gotten more out of it than the charity did. My health has improved, my relationships have deepened immensely, I got a new job, I started a blog, I’m training to be a life coach, I’m leading a support group for a charity that focuses on mental health called Mind Jersey, I’ve lost weight, I’ve taken up sea swimming, I’ve become an advocate for chronic illness. When asked what they would say to anyone else thinking of taking on a fundraising challenge, Louise said:
Do it. Stop procrastinating and just do it, you won’t regret it.By taking on this abstinence, and setting up her fundraising page, Louise raised £2,160 for Children with Cancer UK’s work, which will help us invest in more life-saving childhood cancer research. We’d like to say a huge thank you for your support – it is only thanks to supporters like you that we can continue our work.
We’ve had to deal with our friend’s diagnosis as an adult, we can’t imagine the heartache people must go through with their child.
