Jacob’s treatment and chemotherapy has been absolutely brutal on his little body. Not being able to help my baby is excruciating. As his mum, I should be protecting him. When Jacob begs me to stop the chemo, it’s so hard and I feel so helpless. When he gets low, sad or angry I have to remind him that his treatment kills the cancer.
Kaitlin, Jacob’s sister, was just four months old when Jacob, now five, was diagnosed. Two years on, she’s only ever known her brother with cancer. Along with his dad, Matthew, we’ve all found it difficult to adapt to what’s happened. It’s also been hard financially. We’ve had to deal with a lot of worry and stress. But we still try to enjoy every day, especially when Jacob isn’t feeling too bad or has a burst of energy.
As you can imagine, the good days we have together are precious. There have been two in particular which stand out – the summer and winter parties organised by the charity’s partner ‘Spread a Smile’. It was lovely – there were so many activities for all ages, and everyone was really welcoming.
It felt like such a relief to not think about cancer for the day. Jacob absolutely loved the pizza-making they organised, as he adores cooking! We had so much fun and came away feeling happy, refreshed and united as a family.
To see both Jacob and his sister, Kaitlin, enjoying themselves at the Spread a Smile parties meant the world to us.”
