The Beads of Courage UK Oncology programme helps children cope with cancer by awarding them a bead at every stage of their treatment. Each bead represents a different aspect of treatment or act of courage. Collecting the beads during treatment helps children with cancer to record, tell and own their story.
10 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every day in UK. We aim for as many of them as possible to be able to celebrate the milestones in their treatment. You can help make that possible by donating today.
Theo was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia just before his fourth birthday. Like any parent, all I wanted to do was take it away from him – but I couldn’t. I’ll never get over how sick and numb I felt, and how I blamed myself. Over time, he became very weak and pale. It was so hard to see so many changes in him.
By giving to Children with Cancer UK today, you’ll help to make cancer less traumatic for more children like Theo.
As our little boy started treatment, I felt like we were in a nightmare. Like nothing was real anymore. But then we were told about Children with Cancer UK’s partnership with the Beads of Courage Oncology Programme. For every treatment milestone, Theo has received one of their special beads. These have helped us focus on the positives as a family and look to the future. Theo’s older sister, Mia, loves to make sure all the beads are in the right order. The beads have also had a positive impact on the rest of the family. Each hospital visit isn’t just defined by treatment anymore – it’s about celebrating milestones too.
After experiencing first-hand the amazing impact of Beads of Courage, I was so touched to hear they’ve supported children with over 12 million individual milestones and acts of courage. Each bead that is awarded is a reminder of the hope and support that every child has received.
