With Arla Great North Swim charity places still available for 2024, dive into nature and join our Children with Cancer UK team at the UK’s biggest open water swimming event. Choose from six different open water swimming distances to suit all ages, abilities, and level of experience. Whether you’re looking to get fit, improve your time, soak up some nature, you‘ll be part of an amazing collective experience – guaranteed. Please see below for details on each distance.

Outside the One Mile Swim, there are plenty of other charity places for the Great North Swim available. If you would like to take part in an alternative distance, please visit the Arla Great North Swim website and register for your own place.
Once you have secured your place, please get in touch to let us know or complete the Own Place form below. If you secure your Own Place, we ask that you raise as much as you can through this event to help fund life-saving research and support for children and their families through treatment and beyond.
The first swim (10k swim) starts at 14:00 on Friday 7th of June 2024. On Saturday the 8th of June 2024, the first swim is scheduled to start at 10:00 (half mile swim). The final day (Sunday 9th of June) starts of 09:30 with a 10k swim. Please note that the information point opens at 07:30 on Sunday. All times are subject to change, so please refer to the official website for a full, updated schedule closer to the event.
One of the highlights of the Arla Great North Swim is the different lengths of race you can take part in. It can be as long as 10km but the shortest race is 250 yards. Check out the Great North Swim charity place lengths below.

If you’re keen to try an open water swim, but don’t know where to start, the Great North Swim250 event is ideal. It’s perfect for new or nervous swimmers, families, and children aged 8 and over, to test the water and get a feel for swimming in the great outdoors.
A great introduction to outdoor swimming if it isn’t something you’ve done before. You will swim the equivalent of approximately 32 lengths of a 25m swimming pool, which takes on average 20mins. To take part, you must be at least 12 years old.
This distance is suitable for swimmers of all abilities. You will swim the equivalent of 64 lengths of a 25m pool and the average tom to complete this distance is 40minutes. You must be 16 years or above to enter this event.
The 2mile swim is ideal for people used to open water swimming and looking for a longer challenge. Swimming the equivalent of approximately 125 lengths of a 25m swimming pool, you will definitely have a great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Entrants must be 16 years and above to take part.
If you are a more experienced swimmer, why not take on the 5K swim. You will swim around 200 lengths of a 25m swimming pool in total, but within the stunning lake Windermere. There are cut off times and you must be a strong swimmer to enter. Entrants must be 16 years or above to take part.
This distance is for regular, confident open water swimmers, who are able to take on longer distances. Everyone needs to be able to swim unaided and complete 6 laps of the 1mile course that will be put in place, within 4 hours. This swim is for 18 years and over only.
